Looking for a taste of Naples in the Midlands? Look no further. I've summed up the best tried and tested places in and around the midlands. Italian seal approved.
La Pizza - Derby
On Derby's Friargate, just away from the hustle and bustle of the street's busy nightlife, you can't miss the beautifully tiled pizza oven in the window. They bring all their pizzaioli over from Naples so you know you're getting the real thing!
The Bulls Head, Repton
Along with its sister pub in Quarndon, The Joiners Arms, these two pubs have gained somewhat of a cult following for their quirky style and imaginative menus - see the goldfish in a bag cocktail! They also both have authentic Italian wood fired pizza ovens and, unlike the classic simplicity of La Pizza, the pizzas come packed full of delicious toppings.
Peter Pizza - Loughborough and Leicester
The pizzeria invites you to come and try "the worst pizza one guy on TripAdvisor ever had" (yes really!).
Made famous when Ranieri famously rewarded his Leicester City players with a meal here on him back in 2015. Expect a giant Where's Wally scene and retro movie posters pasted onto the walls, your bill delivered in the mouth of a toy dinosaur and an unashamed confidence. Spray painted in huge letters on the side of the Loughborough building, the pizzeria invites you to come and try "the worst pizza some guy on TripAdvisor ever had" (yes really!), they are so sure you'll disagree. And so am I.
Suede - Nottingham
Not quite in the same calibre as the others, but the best of the bunch if you're looking for good value pizza in Nottingham City Centre. Someone once told me that the reason it was so difficult to get quality pizza in Nottingham was because of pollution restrictions from wood fire burning ovens in the centre, although I'm not sure if this still stands. Anyway, you can always hear Italian coming from the pizzaioli, and the pizzas are slightly on the thinner and crispy side, if you prefer them that way. Top tip: ask for your pizza without Parmesan to have it the more authentic way.
The Worth Brothers Kirk Langley
Last but not least, its technically wine that is the star of the show here, rather than pizza per say. However, if you are after a different pizza experience, we recommend their private wine tasting events that can be arranged. At the birthday party I attended here, the wine was accompanied by a constant stream of pizzas emerging from the oven in front of you! This comes with a hefty price tag but well worth it for a special event.
